April 2015 Workshop Recap

Another sell-out crowd!

Another sell-out crowd!

At GRAVA’s April Workshop (originally schedule in March but postponed due to inclement weather), we focused on Leadership, one of the four core competencies of the Council on Certification in Volunteer Administration. We invited Christine Al-Amin, a long-standing leader among Toastmasters to help us specifically in our ability to lead through our effectiveness as public speakers. Members were given tips and strategies for improving their comfort and skill when presenting in front of others — some of us event go up and practiced those skills during the workshop! See all the pictures from our workshop.

The following are Ten Tips for Public Speaking:

  1. Know your material
  2. Practice
  3. Know your audience
  4. Know the room
  5. Relax
  6. Visualize yourself giving the speech
  7. Realize that people want you to succeed
  8. Don’t apologize
  9. Concentrate on the message, not the medium
  10. Gain experience

4 Effective Leadership Skills that are Key to Successful Leadership:

  1. Communication
  2. Demonstration
  3. Listening
  4. Empowering

Everyone who attended noticed some immediate changes in their own listening skills, best practices to put into action and next steps for their own journey.
