“How Deep Is Your Love” by the Bee Gees was the number one song for three weeks in 1977. It seems only fitting to discuss love in the month of February! As managers and leaders of volunteers we love what we do! Sure we have some days where we have to remind ourselves of why we do what we do, but ultimately at the end of the day, we know we have made a difference and our volunteers have made an impact. We love knowing our efforts have made our community a better place for everyone.
When thinking about how deep you commitment to volunteerism is, you may want to consider writing your own philosophy statement. In the past this was a requirement for CVA candidates to include in their portfolio. I found this exercise to be a personal one where it was important for me to “dig deep” and find out what really fuels my passion for working with volunteers. If you take me up on this, you will want to think about several things and answer a few questions.
*What are the values that lie at the heart of your work in this profession?
*How do these values and commitments reflect your view of the impact of volunteerism in today’s world?
*What motivates and sustains you?
*Where does your passion come from?
*How does your role as a leader of volunteers fit with who you are as a person?
Continue to spread the love and share the impact you, your volunteers and your volunteer services are making!
See you in March,
Melissa M. Gilmore, M Ed., CVA GRAVA President
